Death In June

Death In June - But, What Ends When The Symbols Shatter? (1992)

Photobucket

This collection is WONDERFUL given you enjoy the sound. If you don't like the sound, the lack of general variety will absolutely repel you. It's folk noir/dark folk/whateveryouwishtocall it. Folk guitar, restrained (but effective) vocals, additions of keyboards, occasional trumpet (on 3 tracks), complete with dark and intellectually provoking lyrics.

Current 93- David Tibet

Much of Current 93's early work was similar to late 1970s and early 1980s industrial music: abrasive tape loops, droning synthesizer noises and Tibet's distorted, excoriating vocals. This early work became influential with the goth scene. Later works found Tibet mostly casting off such trappings in favor of a more organic sound, labeled by some as "apocalyptic folk" music, occasionally featuring his sinister nursery rhyme-influenced singing and primarily acoustic folk-styled music.

What’s been described as "a trumpet player trapped in a two dimensional universe" is in fact the unique audio work of Justice Yeldham, a maverick musician with an unhealthy obsession with sheets of broken glass. By pressing his face and lips against the glass whist employing various vocal techniques ranging from throat singing to raspberries, he turns disguarded household windows into crude musical instruments. Resulting in a wide variety of cacophonous noises that are strangely controlled and oddly musical.

Tiny Tim

Herbert Khaury, better known by the stage name Tiny Tim, was an American singer, ukulele player, and musical archivist. He was most famous for his rendition of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" sung in a distinctive high falsetto / vibrato voice (his normal singing voice was baritone). He was generally thought of as a novelty act, though his records display a wide knowledge of American songs. He had no official middle name, though some web sites report that it was "Butros," his father's first name, but adopted Buckingham for no explained reason. Accordingly, his headstone reads "Khaury / Herbert B / Tiny Tim / 1932 1996".

Madness-House Of Fun

As mentioned by Foreman, the song is about coming of age. The lyrics tell the story of a boy on his 16th birthday attempting to buy condoms at a chemist. The age of consent is 16 in England, and he makes a point of stating that he's "16 today and up for fun".However, the boy is misunderstood by the chemist as he attempts to purchase the condoms, using slang terms such as "box of balloons with a featherlight touch".The confused chemist behind the counter eventually informs the boy that the establishment is not a joke shop, and directs him towards the "House of Fun".

DEAD CHINA DOLL

Dead China Doll have always existed under the radar. In fact, even to get my hands on this album I had to get a phone number from a friend and then rendezvous with the bass guitarist at his work. The band seem most comfortable dwelling in the shadows, with their commercially unacceptable song titles, the often drawn-out soundscapes and non-linear arrangements making them the kind of group that you are unlikely to hear overplayed on your local radio station anytime soon.

The music, separated into five tracks that span in duration from six-and-a-half minutes to a whopping eleven minute epic, is probably too intense for anything more than a single serving per day. The track breaks are completely irrelevant as well, given that it's impossible to imagine this record not being listened to from start-to-finish as a single body of work.

The unconventional path this record takes is powered primarily by it's complete lack of familiar structure. The disjointed 45 minute journey continually sparks off into numerous different directions at once, without any care as to how it plans to make it to it's destination, or even return to where it all began. It's this central ideal of throwing caution to the wind, creating songs that revel in their broken song arrangements and musical wandering, that makes this such an enjoyable slab of music.

The epic nature of the record is not only achieved through the stretched length of each of the songs, but also the injection of orchestral elements alongside the thrashing of guitars and pounding rhythm patterns. It adds an emotional side to the music, which if not utilised would leave the songs sounding a little too much like theatrical prog-rock jam sessions.

This battle between the gentle use of cello and the smashing of punk riffs is also part of the album's most effective weapon - contrast. The quiet moments are required just as much as the thunderous climaxes. The ear-bleeding screeches of guitar snuggle up next to piano loops and pounding drum lines in a confusing, yet completely natural way. At times the landscape is stark and baron, while in the very next instance it's an over-crowded palette of ideas, all fighting to be heard and recognised. It rarely stays on one theme too long, but in the same regard pulls a lot of it's strength from the control of the sounds and the way in which each piece of music builds to various points of either climatic joy or bone rattling terror.

It's doubtful the band realise it, but this album is part of a much larger picture - an emerging, gutter dwelling sub-genre of Australian music where Dead China Doll find themselves as the Sydney representatives. Much like Witch Hats, Spider Vomit and Snowman, Dead China Doll paint a dark picture with scattered moments of brightness creating a fantastic antithesis of ideas and sounds. This isn't the smoothest journey, but it's definitely rewarding and worthy of your time. I can't imagine any other Sydney group releasing such an engrossing and unbelievably powerful record this year.

Silver Apples were a psychedelic electronic music duo from New York City composed of Simeon Coxe III, who performed as Simeon, on a primitive synthesizer of his own devising (also named The Simeon), and drummer Danny Taylor. The group was active between 1967 and 1969, before reforming in the mid 1990s. They were one of the first groups to employ electronic music techniques extensively within a rock idiom, and their minimalistic style, with its pulsing, driving beat and frequently discordant modality, anticipated not only the experimental electronic music and krautrock of the 1970s, but underground dance music and indie rock of the 1990s as well.

The Yamasuki Singers

Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki was a pseudo-Japanese concept album from prolific French production duo Jean Kluger and Daniel Vangarde. Based on a dance named the "Yamasuki", it was originally released in very small quantities on the independent label Biram in 1972.
Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki is a collection of beautiful pop songs, sung by a Japanese choir, offset to pounding drum patterns, vibes and fuzz guitar work-outs.
