Antony And The Johnsons

Antony and the Johnsons (New York City)

Current members include:

* Julia Kent (previously of Rasputina) - first chair cello
* Parker Kindred - drummer
* Jeff Langston - bassist
* Doug Wieselman - horns
* Maxim Moston - violin, arrangement
* Rob Moose - guitar, violin
* Antony Hegarty - vocals

*Their early live shows were often opened by Dr. Julia Yasuda, an intersex person, who performed the welcome in Morse code.

*One theme explored in the band's music is aspects of transgender life. This is expressed in songs such as "For Today I Am a Boy", in which a young boy dreams of growing up to be a woman. This song is featured in the 2007 documentary Red without Blue.

*Producer Hal Willner heard the EP and played it to Lou Reed, who immediately recruited him for his project The Raven.

*Antony's second full-length album, 2005's I Am a Bird Now, was greeted with positive reviews and significantly more mainstream attention, winning the Mercury Music Prize for the best album of 2005.

Wesley Willis

Wesley Willis (May 31, 1963 – August 21, 2003) was a busker musician and artist from Chicago. A diagnosed schizophrenic, he gained a sizable cult following in the 1990s after releasing several hundred songs of unique but simple music, with emphasis on his humorous, bizarre stream-of-consciousness lyrics.

Not much is known about Wesley's childhood, however Illinois Department of Children and Family Services records show that Willis and his siblings spent most of their childhoods in various foster homes.
In 1989, Willis began hearing what he called "demon mullets" and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He often mentioned that his demons were named "Heartbreaker," "Nervewrecker," and "Meansucker". He called his psychotic episodes "hell rides". Alternatively, he declared rock and roll to be "the joy ride music".
Willis sold ink pen drawings of the Chicago cityscape on the street (in The Daddy of Rock 'N' Roll, Steve Albini tells an anecdote about how Willis was in one train station drawing a detailed picture of a different train station from memory). These works of outsider art appear on the covers of his albums.

On August 21, 2003, at the age of 40, Willis died due to complications from chronic myelogenous leukemia. A memorial service for him was held on August 27th, in Chicago, Illinois.

At the time of his death, he had recorded over 1,000 songs but his total life savings were less than $300. Having sold out hundreds of venues across the country, the question still remains where all of Willis' money went. In a Howard Stern interview, it was mentioned that Willis would receive as much as a $10,000 advance for the production of an album, and that he would then earn a portion of the money received from album sales and live shows.

The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms (1980)

Photobucket

Even the cover is a winner, with a washed-out look that screams new wave via horn-rimmed glasses, even more so than contemporaneous pictures of either Elvis Costello or The Embarrassment. But if it was all look and no brain, "Crazy Rhythms" would long ago have been dismissed as an early-'80s relic. That's exactly what this album is not, right from the soft, haunting hints of percussion that preface the suddenly energetic jump of the appropriately titled "The Boy With the Perpetual Nervousness." From there the band delivers seven more originals plus a striking cover of The Beatles' "Everybody's Got Something to Hide" that rips along even more quickly than the original. The guitar team of Mercer and Million smokes throughout, whether it's soft, rhythmic chiming with a mysterious, distanced air or blasting, angular solos. But Fier is the band's secret weapon, able to play straight-up beats but aiming at a rumbling, strange punch that updates Velvet Underground/Krautrock trance into giddier realms. Mercer's obvious Lou Reed vocal inflections make the VU roots even clearer, but even at this stage of the game there's something fresh about the work the quartet does, even 20 years on — a good blend of past and present, rave-up and reflection. When the group's later label, A&M, finally got around to reissuing the album for the first time stateside, a curious bonus was included: a version of The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," recorded by the later lineup of the band in 1990. Mercer's voice is noticeably different from his decade-old self, but it's an enthusiastic rendition not too far out of place. [Source: AMG]

Mu-Mesons

Photobucket

"The Mu-Mesons is a community of musicians who express the whole range of what it means to be an outsider both socially and in the practice of music.

They create a music which contains humour, but it can also be deeply disturbing and often profound; a music of aberrant psychosis created under some of the most difficult economic and social conditions that a post industrial western world can serve up.

Leonarder rejects any criticism that the Mu-Mesons somehow exploits sick and suffering people for his own ends. He points out that clearly the Mu-Mesons are at the bottom of any commercial ladder and have remained there for 20 years, so there's no money to be made....also everyone in the band wants to perform music...as in...you can't stop them performing music...as in...if they know a gig is coming up, they start non-stop phoning in excitement.

For nearly 20 years, The Mu Mesons have existed without the slightest recognition from anyone. With only 1 release to their name (the B-side of Phlegm 7") and not even a fleeting mention of their role in Thug’s demise in Clinton Walker’s book on Australian underground music, the MM’s stand by the fact that their live performances are the only way for them to be seen and heard.

Einstürzende Neubauten

Einstürzende Neubauten - Strategies Against Architecture III [1991-2001] (2001)

Much like the first and second installments of Einsturzende Neubauten's overview series, "Strategies Against Architecture III" haphazardly juggles highlights with rarities, live tracks, and unreleased material, doubling as an agreeable state of the union.

Fad Gadget

Frank Tovey better know as Fad Gadget released this album "Incontinent" in 1981
The albums cover features Tovey dressed up as puppet punch!
Unlike his first album where he focused on using as many foreign objects as possible,
he focused more on traditional instruments.
Just by looking at the album cover i think you will get the hint about what his musics all about!
